Sevilleja de la Jara is a small municipality in the province of Toledo, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its municipal council issued emergency fractional currency when coin disappeared almost entirely from circulation in 1936–37. These local issues — collectively known as "moneda local de necesidad" — were produced under no central authority and with whatever printing resources the town could access, which in most cases meant very little. Quality and consistency varied enormously from one municipality to the next.
