Segarra de Gaià was one of dozens of Catalan municipalities that issued emergency coinage during the Spanish Civil War after the Republican government's collapse of conventional coin supply left local economies effectively paralyzed. These municipal issues — collectively cataloged under the billetes y monedas de necesidad category — were technically illegal under central Republican law but tolerated out of necessity. Most saw circulation so brief and localized that survivors in any condition are genuinely scarce, and copper-nickel pieces like this one suffered harder use than the cardboard notes many towns issued alongside them.
