Segarra de Gaià was a tiny municipality in the Tarragona province that issued its own emergency coinage during the Spanish Civil War, as the Republican zone's acute shortage of small change forced hundreds of local councils to produce their own currency from 1936 onward. The Generalitat de Catalunya nominally oversaw these emissions but in practice had little control over what individual ajuntaments struck, which is why surviving examples vary so wildly in quality and consistency across the region.
Turró catalogues this copper piece as distinct from the cardboard and aluminum issues some neighboring villages relied on — a small distinction that hints at marginally better municipal resources. Very few of these local wartime issues survived the Francoist period intact.
