Sasserra is a municipality so small — fewer than 200 inhabitants even in the 1930s — that its decision to issue local paper money during the Civil War is less a banking act than a survival measure. The Republican government's decree of June 1937 authorized Catalan municipalities to produce their own subsidiary currency to cover the catastrophic shortage of small-denomination coinage, most of which had been hoarded or melted down by that point. Hundreds of ajuntaments complied, producing notes of wildly varying quality and local character.
Turró 2299 is among the more obscure municipal emissions in the Bages registry. Very few circulated outside the village itself.
