Santa Cruz de la Zarza is a small municipality in Toledo province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its municipal council issued emergency fractional paper money — vales or billetes de necesidad — to address the near-total disappearance of metallic coinage from circulation after 1936. The Imprenta Provincial de Ocaña, the provincial press of Ocaña, handled production for several local councils in the region, which gives notes from this cluster a shared typographic character even when the issuing bodies differ.
Survival rates for these municipal issues vary enormously. Notes that actually circulated through wartime commerce suffered hard use; those printed in excess of local need were often simply filed away or destroyed when the Nationalist peseta was imposed across the country.
