Salou's 1937 peseta belongs to the vast category of Spanish Civil War emergency municipal issues — locally printed scrip produced when small change disappeared from circulation almost entirely after 1936. The Junta Veïnal, a basic neighborhood administrative body, had no banking infrastructure behind it. These notes were backed by nothing more formal than local trust and the expectation that the war would end quickly enough to redeem them.
Turró catalogued thousands of these Catalan municipal emissions, and Salou's entry is among the more obscure ones — a coastal fishing village of minimal commercial weight, which makes surviving examples correspondingly uncommon.
