Salas Altas is a tiny municipality in the Huesca province of Aragon — population measured in the hundreds even in the 1930s. During the Spanish Civil War, the anarchist collectivization of agriculture across republican Aragon produced hundreds of these hyper-local emergency currencies, issued by peasant collectives when coin vanished from circulation almost entirely after July 1936. The Consejo Regional de Defensa de Aragón briefly gave these issues a degree of quasi-official sanction, though legality was always contested by the central republican government in Valencia.
The Gari Mon reference places this firmly within the documented Aragonese series. Thick card stock was a practical choice — local printing resources were improvised, and heavier substrate helped these pieces survive repeated handling in a single village economy.
