Sagunto issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 because the Republic's small-change crisis had made coins effectively disappear from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent. Municipal councils across Republican Spain filled the vacuum with locally produced paper, and Sagunto was one of hundreds to do so. The quality and quantity of surviving examples varies enormously by town; some issues are genuinely rare, others were printed in large enough runs that they survived in reasonable numbers.
Turró's cataloguing of Valencia province issues remains the essential reference for distinguishing variants in this series.
