Sabadell was one of dozens of Catalan municipalities that issued their own emergency currency — known as moneda local or moneda de paper — during the Civil War years of 1936–1939, when the collapse of normal banking and coin shortages made local scrip a practical necessity. This 2003 piece is a commemorative replica of that wartime issue, produced by the Real Casa de la Moneda in Madrid to archival standards, including an embedded watermark that the original may or may not have carried.

The replica program was part of broader institutional interest in documenting Catalan wartime monetary history. That it was printed in Madrid carries its own quiet irony.
