Rus is a small municipality in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, and this piece is a product of the acute small-change shortage that paralyzed commercial life across Republican Spain from mid-1936 onward. With the central government unable to supply adequate fractional coinage, municipalities, cooperatives, and local trade unions across Spain improvised their own emergency scrip — sometimes within weeks of the war's outbreak. The Ayuntamiento de Rus was among hundreds of town halls that took this step.
The Gari Monagas reference catalogue remains the primary authority for these Spanish Civil War local emissions, many of which survive in tiny quantities.
