One of hundreds of emergency municipal and cooperative issues that flooded Catalonia and the Aragón front during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone's coin supply effectively collapsed within weeks of the July 1936 uprising. Agricultural cooperatives were among the most active issuers — they had the local authority, the membership networks, and the immediate practical need. The Sindicat Agrícola at Ribarroja d'Ebre, a small Ebro river town that would later sit directly in the path of the 1938 Battle of the Ebro, was typical of this grassroots monetary improvisation.
