Rajadell is a tiny municipality in Bages comarca, inland Catalonia, with a population that barely exceeded a few hundred during the 1930s. That such a small settlement issued its own emergency paper currency at all is the direct consequence of the Republican government's July 1937 decree authorizing Catalan municipalities to produce local scrip — the coinage shortage caused by hoarding and wartime metal demands had made small-denomination exchange almost impossible.
Turró catalogs dozens of these municipal emissions, but Rajadell's is among the more obscure. Survival rate is predictably low given the issuing authority's size and the chaotic end of the war in this region by early 1939.
