Puig is a small municipality north of Valencia, and like hundreds of Valencian and Catalan towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency paper money when Republican Spain's coin supply collapsed under wartime hoarding and metal requisitions. These cartones — cardboard discs pressed into service as fractional currency — were strictly local instruments, accepted only within the issuing municipality and often worthless the moment the front lines shifted.
The 46mm diameter is unusually large for a one-peseta cardboard issue, suggesting production by a local printer working without standardized tooling.
