Pozoblanco is a small agricultural town in the province of Córdoba, and its decision to issue emergency paper money in 1937 reflects the near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage circulation across Republican-held Spain during the Civil War. Hundreds of municipalities did the same, each scrambling to keep local commerce functioning as metal coin disappeared — hoarded, melted, or simply lost to the chaos of war.

The printer, Imprenta Bassa i Pagès, was a Barcelona commercial house that fulfilled a significant volume of these municipal emergency issues, which accounts for a certain consistency in paper stock across otherwise unrelated localities.
