Ponts is a small municipality in the Lleida province of Catalonia, and this note is a product of the breakdown in small-change supply that followed the July 1936 military uprising. With centimos coins vanishing from circulation almost immediately, hundreds of Catalan municipalities — Ponts among them — issued their own emergency fractional currency under authorization from the Generalitat de Catalunya. The Ajuntament de Ponts series is among the more obscure of these local emissions, reflecting a community of only a few hundred inhabitants printing money out of practical necessity rather than any institutional ambition.
Turró's exhaustive catalog of Catalan Civil War paper is the primary reference for tracing these issues; without it, attributing minor municipal notes like this one would be nearly impossible.
