One of thousands of emergency paper issues produced by Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, when the collapse of small-denomination coinage left local economies effectively frozen. The Generalitat de Catalunya authorized municipalities to print their own fractional currency — these locally-issued notes, known as "moneda de paper local," circulated only within the issuing township and were theoretically redeemable once normal monetary supply resumed. For most, redemption never came.
Polinyà, a small agricultural municipality in the Vallès Occidental, was among the smaller communities to participate. The Imprenta El Secretariat Català in Barcelona handled printing for numerous Catalan municipal issues during this period, which is reflected in the Turró catalog's tight clustering of reference numbers for notes sharing that printer.
