Poble del Llierca is a municipality in the Garrotxa comarca of Girona with a population that barely reached a few hundred during the Civil War years. That the ayuntament issued its own peseta note at all reflects the near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage in Republican-held Catalonia by mid-1937 — a problem so acute that hundreds of municipalities, down to the most obscure, printed their own emergency paper to keep local commerce moving.
Imprenta C. Barnés in Palamós produced notes for several Catalan municipalities during this period, which accounts for the shared print quality across what are otherwise entirely unrelated local emissions. Turró catalogues this as #1933 — a high catalog number that itself conveys just how many of these municipal notes were produced.
