La Pobla de Claramunt is a small municipality in the Anoia comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similarly sized towns, it resorted to issuing its own emergency paper currency during the Spanish Civil War when the Republic's coinage disappeared from circulation almost overnight. These municipal notes — known collectively as "moneda local de guerra" — were produced in enormous variety across Catalonia between 1936 and 1939, with quality ranging widely depending on what printer a given ajuntament could access.
Imprenta El Secretariat Català handled a significant number of these small-municipality commissions out of Barcelona, which accounts for the relatively clean typography despite the wartime circumstances.
