Opmerkingen

Pinell de Brai is a small municipality in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, and this 1 Pesseta note is one of hundreds of locally issued emergency fractional currencies — billetes de necesidad — that flooded Republican-held Catalonia and Aragon after the July 1936 coup disrupted coin circulation almost entirely. The Consell Municipal effectively became its own central bank, however briefly.

Imprenta Josep Bassa in nearby Mora d'Ebre printed for several surrounding municipalities during this period, which means the physical production quality across Turró's regional listings is fairly consistent even when the issuing authorities differ. The official stamp was the primary — often the only — authentication mechanism standing between a legitimate emission and a forgery.
