Pineda de Segarra is a small municipality in the comarca of Bages, inland Catalonia, and like hundreds of similar villages it issued its own emergency small change during 1937 when the Republic's coinage virtually disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply not minted in sufficient quantities to meet wartime demand. The Catalan regional government had authorized local authorities to fill the gap with paper fractional currency, and they did so in enormous variety.
Grafos was a Barcelona print works operating under collectivization, taken over by its workers in the anarcho-syndicalist wave that swept Catalan industry after July 1936. The Turró catalogue remains the primary reference for these emergency local issues.
