Palau-solità i Plegamans is a small municipality north of Barcelona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War after metallic coin disappeared almost entirely from circulation by mid-1936. These ajuntament-issued notes were a purely local solution to a local crisis — accepted at the town market and little else.
The handstamp was the only security measure available to most municipalities of this size. Forgery was rarely the concern; public confidence in paper from a known local authority was.
