Palau-solità i Plegamans is a small municipality north of Barcelona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War after metallic coin disappeared almost entirely from circulation by mid-1936. These ajuntament-issued notes were a purely local solution to a local crisis — accepted at the town market and little else.
