Ollería is a small municipality in Valencia, and this note is one of hundreds of hyper-local emergency emissions produced across the Republican zone during the Civil War after the withdrawal of coinage from circulation in 1936–37 stripped communities of any means of making change. Municipal councils, cooperatives, and even individual businesses issued their own scrip, with no central authority controlling design, denomination, or material. The result was a chaotic but historically vivid record of how localised the economic breakdown actually was.
At under five centimetres across, this is card rather than banknote in any conventional sense — closer to a tram token than a monetary instrument.
