Nulles is a village in the Camp de Tarragona with a population that barely reached a few hundred during the 1930s — making this one of the more obscure municipal emergency issues of the Spanish Civil War. The Republican government's decree of 1937 authorizing local authorities to print small-denomination paper currency unleashed a torrent of these issues across Catalonia, each technically legal tender only within the issuing municipality's own bounds.
Imprenta Castells in Valls served several surrounding municipalities during this period, producing notes of noticeably varying quality depending on available materials. Three signatories were required by the governing framework: the interventor, the alcalde-president, and the finance councillor — a bureaucratic structure maintained even as the war eroded the institutions behind it.
