Níjar is a small municipality in Almería province, and like dozens of Spanish towns, it issued its own emergency paper money during the Civil War after the Republican government's decree of 1937 authorizing local authorities to print low-denomination substitutes for the coinage that had vanished from circulation almost overnight. The Gari reference places this among the better-documented Andalusian locals, but survival rates for these municipal issues vary wildly — many were printed on whatever paper was available and circulated hard in genuinely difficult conditions.
The B suffix in the Gari cataloging typically denotes a variant, most often a difference in serial numbering, ink color, or paper stock from the primary listing.
