Muro de Alcoy is a small municipality in the Valencia region, and like dozens of similar towns during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when coin virtually disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent in a wartime economy running on improvisation. These municipal issues were locally authorized under Republican decree and printed with whatever means were at hand.

The Gari Montllor reference corpus documents hundreds of such Valencian municipals, and the 985-D suffix indicates a distinct variety within the Muro de Alcoy listings — likely a color or typographic variant. Survival is erratic; some issues from comparable villages exist in quantity, others in single figures.
