Comments

Josep Llobet's bakery and provisions shop in Mura issued this note during the Spanish Civil War, when the collapse of small-denomination coinage created a vacuum that municipalities, cooperatives, and private businesses across Catalonia rushed to fill. Thousands of these local emergency issues — called vals or moneda de necessitat — were produced by whatever printer was nearest and willing. Rubiralta in Manresa handled several such commissions from the surrounding comarca.

The near-square format is a function of the tiny denomination and the card stock used to approximate coin durability. Llobet's issue was redeemable only at his own establishment — private scrip, not municipal currency.
