One of hundreds of emergency local issues that flooded Republican-held Spain during the Civil War, when the hoarding of metallic coin created a paralyzing shortage of small change. Municipal councils, cooperatives, and trade unions all stepped in as de facto issuers — with zero central authorization and wildly inconsistent results in terms of printing quality and redemption reliability.
Morella, a fortified hilltop town in Castellón, was under Republican control until April 1938, giving this cooperative issue a window of perhaps a year in active use before Nationalist forces took the town and rendered it worthless.
