Montealegre del Castillo is a small municipality in Albacete province, Castilla-La Mancha. This note was issued by its local council — the Consejo Municipal — during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republic's central government could not guarantee adequate small-denomination coinage supply to rural communities. Hundreds of Spanish municipalities issued their own emergency paper scrip in 1936–1938 to keep local commerce functioning, and most of these issues are now extremely scarce simply because production runs were tiny and the notes were used hard in tight local economies before being withdrawn.
The Gari catalogue remains the primary reference for these Spanish municipal emissions, and the Mon#948 series for Montealegre del Castillo is among the less-documented entries.
