Montañana is a tiny settlement north of Zaragoza, and like hundreds of Aragonese and Catalan municipalities during the Spanish Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone commerce ground to a halt after July 1936. The silver and copper coinage that small vendors depended on had vanished almost overnight — hoarded, melted, or simply absent from circulation. These municipal notes filled the gap at the most basic transaction level.
Imprenta A. Figueres in Tàrrega handled printwork for several small-council issues in the region. The official stamp is the only security feature, which tells you everything about the trust model: these notes circulated purely on local authority, accepted nowhere outside the issuing district.
