Mont-roig del Camp issued emergency fractional currency — moneda local — during the Civil War under the authority of its republican municipal council, part of a broader collapse of small-denomination coinage that forced hundreds of Catalan and Spanish municipalities to print their own paper money in 1936–37. The Generalitat de Catalunya formally authorized this practice, but production quality and survival rates varied enormously from town to town.

Mont-roig is better known internationally as the village where Joan Miró spent formative summers, though that connection has no bearing on this note's design or issue.
