Issued by the municipal councils of Menorca during the Spanish Civil War, this piece reflects the near-total breakdown of the Republican monetary supply chain by 1937. With the Nationalist blockade strangling the Balearics and peseta coinage hoarded or simply absent from daily commerce, local authorities across Republican-held territory resorted to emergency issues. Menorca, the last Balearic island to fall to Franco — it surrendered in February 1939, after Mallorca and Ibiza had already been lost — maintained its own fragile civic administration until the very end.
The Turró reference IB-2 places this among a small body of documented Balearic emergency issues, distinguishing it from the considerably more numerous mainland municipal tokens of the same period.
