Maspujols is a village in the Camp de Tarragona comarca with a population that barely reached 400 during the 1930s. That a municipality this small was issuing its own paper currency in 1937 reflects the near-total collapse of small-denomination metallic coinage in Republican-held Catalonia — silver and copper had been hoarded, melted down, or simply vanished from circulation, forcing hundreds of municipalities to fill the gap themselves. The Generalitat eventually attempted to regulate the chaos, but local emissions continued regardless.

Turró catalogues well over a thousand distinct Catalan municipal issues from this period. Maspujols managed at least one.
