Masdenverge is a small municipality in the Montsià comarca of southern Catalonia, and like hundreds of Catalan and Valencian towns during the Spanish Civil War, its municipal council issued emergency fractional currency when Republican Spain's small-change shortage became acute. These local emissions — collectively known as "moneda local" or "paper moneda" — were authorized from mid-1936 onward and are catalogued exhaustively by Turró precisely because so many villages produced notes of wildly varying quality and survival rates.
Thick card stock was common for the smallest-run municipal issues, partly because it survived brief circulation better than thin paper when printing infrastructure was improvised. For an emission from a village this size, surviving examples in any condition are genuinely uncommon.
