Martorell's wartime municipal scrip belongs to the vast ecosystem of Republican-zone emergency issues produced after the Spanish Civil War disrupted normal banking and caused acute small-denomination shortages across Catalonia. The Generalitat had authorized local councils to print their own provisional notes in 1937, resulting in hundreds of hyper-local issues — some professionally lithographed, many rudimentary — that rarely circulated beyond the issuing municipality's market.
Turró catalogued over 2,800 such Catalan issues. Martorell, a small town on the Llobregat river southwest of Barcelona, produced this 1 Pesseta alongside companion values. Post-war Francoist authorities declared all Republican municipal scrip void, and most surviving examples came not from circulation but from local collections assembled before the suppression.
