Marçà is a small municipality in the Priorat comarca of Catalonia, and this note is one of thousands of tiny-denomination emergency issues produced by Spanish Republican councils during the Civil War after the Nationalist uprising disrupted the national coin supply in 1936. The Generalitat de Catalunya authorized local bodies to issue their own fractional currency, which is why notes from villages of a few hundred inhabitants exist at all. Imprenta Solé of Tarragona printed for numerous councils across the province, and the official stamp was the primary — often only — anti-counterfeiting measure applied.
