During the Spanish Civil War, the hoarding of metallic currency created severe shortages of small-denomination coins across Republican-held territory. Catalonia saw an explosion of locally issued paper substitutes — moneda de necessitat — produced by municipalities, cooperatives, trade unions, and individual businesses.
