During the Spanish Civil War, the hoarding of metallic currency created severe shortages of small-denomination coins across Republican-held territory. Catalonia saw an explosion of locally issued paper substitutes — moneda de necessitat — produced by municipalities, cooperatives, trade unions, and individual businesses. Ferreteria Sol Germans i Cia. was a hardware merchant, not a financial institution, yet the Republican framework briefly legitimized such issues as functional local scrip.
Imprenta Rubiralta was a Manresa print shop responsible for several of these emergency issues, which accounts for the family resemblance across different Manresa issuers from the same period. AL#3174 places this within Arenys de Mar cataloguer Albert Llordén's exhaustive classification of Catalan Civil War necessitat notes — a reference system that remains the standard for the series.
