Lújar is a tiny village in the Alpujarras range of Granada province, and by 1937 the Republican government's inability to supply small-denomination coinage to rural municipalities had become acute enough that local councils were issuing their own paper currency. These emergency fractional notes — often called "billetes locales de necesidad" — proliferated across Republican-held Spain during this period, with each issuing body essentially operating on trust and local authority alone.

Papelería Lacoste in Almería handled printing for several Granada-area municipalities during the war, which gives this note a traceable production chain unusual for issues this small. The Gari Montaner catalogue reference 837-B distinguishes it from at least one variant within the Lújar series.
