Llívia is a Spanish exclave surrounded entirely by French territory — a geographical anomaly dating to the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees, which ceded villages but not towns to France, and Llívia successfully argued its status as a town. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican committee issued emergency cardboard currency because metal had been requisitioned for the war effort and the exclave's physical isolation made resupply erratic. Turró catalogues this issue among the more geographically curious of the billetes de necesidad, produced by a community that was, in the most literal sense, an island.
