Llavorsí is a tiny municipality in the Pallars Sobirà comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of other Catalan and Aragonese towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when the Republic's small-change shortage became acute in 1937. The Generalitat de Catalunya had formally authorized local councils to print their own notes, which is the only reason something this small — a village council, not a bank — had legal standing to issue currency at all.
Printed by Josep Güell in La Pobla de Segur, roughly 30 kilometers south, the note relies on an official stamp as its sole security measure — a frank admission of the circumstances under which it was made. Turró catalogs well over a thousand such local issues from this period; #1339 places Llavorsí deep in that long, unglamorous list.
