Lanaja is a small agricultural municipality in Huesca province, Aragon. This note was issued by its local defense council in the opening weeks of the Civil War, when the Republican zone fractured into hundreds of autonomous local economies, each improvising emergency scrip from whatever paper and printing resources were at hand. The nearly square format and card stock construction are a direct consequence of that improvisation — there was no printer's specification, only necessity.

Aragon's local war issues of 1936 are among the smallest-denomination emergency notes produced anywhere in twentieth-century Europe.
