La Garganta was a small municipality in the Extremadura region, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency local currency when the Republican government's supply of small-denomination notes collapsed under wartime strain. These hyper-local emissions — collectively catalogued under the broader Guerra Civil cartones and billetes locales literature — were produced by municipal authorities, trade unions, or local Popular Front committees, often on whatever card stock or heavy paper was at hand.
Gari 699-B implies a variant exists, suggesting the committee issued more than one type or revision, which was not uncommon when early printings ran out quickly or were deemed insufficiently forgery-resistant by local standards.
