L'Arboç is a small municipality in the Baix Penedès comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns it began issuing its own emergency paper currency in 1936 after the outbreak of the Civil War caused a collapse in small-denomination coinage circulation. The Republican government's decree authorizing municipal and collective issuance gave these ajuntaments legal cover, but production quality and design were left entirely to local initiative.
Arts Gràfiques Barnadas in nearby El Vendrell handled several of the comarca's municipal issues — proximity mattered when transport was unreliable and time was short. Turró's catalog remains the primary reference for systematically documenting these Catalan civil war locals.
