Jabalquinto is a small municipality in the province of Jaén, Andalusia. During the early months of the Spanish Civil War, dozens of Republican-held towns across Spain — unable to access formal banking infrastructure or sufficient small change — issued their own emergency local currency under the authority of local Popular Front committees. These frente popular notes were produced under improvised conditions, printed locally on whatever stock was available, and intended purely for circulation within the issuing municipality.
Thick card stock was a common choice for these emisiones locales, offering durability when professional banknote paper was unavailable. Most were redeemed or destroyed once central Republican monetary authority reasserted itself; survival rates for the smaller Andalusian issues are low.
