Spain's Second Republic, proclaimed in April 1931 following Alfonso XIII's departure, moved quickly to establish a coinage program distinct from the monarchy. Several pattern designs were produced and evaluated before the Republic settled on its circulating types. This copper piece — catalogued as Aureo 33 — belongs to that competitive trial phase and was never approved for general issue.
The rarity is inherent to the process: patterns submitted or struck for committee review survived in tiny numbers, often a handful of examples at most.
