Ibi is a small industrial town in Alicante province, and by 1937 it had fallen within the Republican zone of the Spanish Civil War. Dozens of Catalan and Valencian municipalities issued emergency coinage that year as the Nationalist blockade strangled the supply of state-issued currency. Ibi's issues are closely associated with its toy manufacturing industry — the town was, and remains, Spain's toy capital — and local factory cooperatives played a direct role in organizing wartime economic life, including the authorization of these necessity pieces.
