Guissona is a small market town in the Segarra comarca of Lleida province, and like hundreds of other Catalan and Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coin shortages became acute. These municipal vales were a purely local solution — accepted at the corner shop, the cooperative, the bar — and most were redeemed, lost, or simply discarded once the war ended.
Turró catalogued over 1,500 distinct Spanish municipal issues from this period. That density of local issuers is precisely why surviving Guissona examples attract specialist interest rather than general market demand.
