La Granadella is a small municipality in the Les Garrigues comarca of Lleida, and like dozens of similarly isolated Catalan and Aragonese towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when the Republican monetary system fractured after July 1936. The celluloid pieces produced here are among the more unusual surviving examples of this phenomenon — most municipalities reached for cardboard or paper, not plastic.
The choice of opaque celluloid was almost certainly dictated by whatever local industrial material happened to be available, not by any deliberate policy.
