Gisclareny is one of the smallest municipalities in Catalonia — during the 1930s its population barely exceeded a few dozen souls. Like hundreds of other Catalan towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency paper currency after the Republican government's decree of September 1936 authorized local authorities to print small-denomination notes to address a near-total collapse in coin circulation. The coins had been hoarded, melted, or simply vanished.
Printed by Jaume Molins in nearby Berga, this 1 pesseta note is among the more obscure entries in the Turró catalog. Notes from municipalities this small were produced in very limited quantities and rarely survived in any number.
