Gerri de la Sal is a tiny Pyrenean village in the Pallars Sobirà comarca of Lleida, and this 1 Peseta note is one of thousands of emergency paper issues produced by Catalan municipalities during the Spanish Civil War. The Republican government's chronic small-coin shortage after 1936 forced even the most isolated communities to print their own fractional currency — locally known as "moneda de necessitat" — just to keep daily commerce moving.
Turró catalogues relatively few issues from Pallars Sobirà, and Gerri de la Sal's emission is among the more obscure village series. The official stamp constitutes the primary authentication mechanism, as was typical for councils with no access to security printing facilities.
